Mission is at the heart of our ministry and there are many ways to serve at First Presbyterian Church of Newton including, preparing and serving a hot meal at Manna House, cooking dinner for our Family Promise guests, serving at one of the Fifth Sunday Mission events, donating food for the Sussex County Food Pantry, helping to make pies to go into Thanksgiving dinner baskets for families in need in our community and attending a mission trip where you will make home repairs for seniors and families in need.

The group has traveled to Mobile, Al., Walpole Island, Ontario, Lynchburg Virginia, Hurricane, WV, and Machias, Ma., just to name a few. This summer, the team is going to Keansburg, NJ to help families still struggling to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

Fifth Sunday Mission
We are trying something new in 2017, a Fifth Sunday Mission. A fifth Sunday of a month happens four times a year and we are using those Sundays to get out into our community to serve others. Each fifth Sunday is an opportunity for families to serve together. Our first Fifth Sunday included making turkey casseroles, decorating cupcakes and place mats and making tray favors to leave for Manna House to serve their guests the following day. In April, we went out in teams to clean up yards for folks who could not do the work themselves. Look for our next adventure in July!

Family Promise, Manna House & Bread of Life
Three community programs that are important to our congregation include Family Promise, a program for homeless families, and Manna House and Bread of Life, local community lunch programs.
In addition to hosting the family Promise Day Center in the Spurgeon House, we host the guests in our church building at least 3 weeks a year. We are always looking for those willing to serve a meal, provide overnight coverage while the guests are in the building and even wash laundry at the end of their stay. We have hosted Manna House in our church building since its inception, almost 30 years ago. In addition, our congregation, like others, prepares and serves the hot lunch to the guests, one day each month. and prepares and serves a lunch for Bread of Life, a Saturday lunch program, 6 times a year. |
